Conditions improve for three children injured in fire

The conditions of three children injured in a fire Wednesday have been upgraded, according to a hospital spokeswoman.

Three-year-old twins, a boy and a girl, and their 5-year-old brother were critically injured Wednesday night after suffering smoke inhalation when a fire started at their downtown apartment.

A University Medical Center spokeswoman said Friday afternoon that one child is now in good condition, one is in fair condition, and one is in serious condition.

Las Vegas police said felony child neglect charges probably would be filed against the children's caregiver, but it was unclear who would be charged.

The mattress fire, at Hidden Village Apartments at 1825 Lewis Ave., was set by children playing with a lighter or matches, according to fire investigators.

The children's baby sitter, Gary Layton, who said he was not working that night, said the mother wrongfully implicated him to authorities.

Layton told the Review-Journal that the children's mother, Jessica Warthren, left them unsupervised.

As of Friday afternoon no one had been arrested in the case.
