Coroner IDs woman killed in apartment fire

The woman who died after an apartment caught fire on Tuesday has been identified by the Clark County coroner’s office.

She is Sangwal McGinnis, 66, of Las Vegas, the coroner said Friday.

McGinnis was found unresponsive in a burning apartment in the 300 block of South Maryland Parkway, near Bridger Avenue, about 2 p.m. She was taken to University Medical Center with severe burns and died later that evening, the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

The fire started on a mattress, according to the fire department. The apartment didn’t have a smoke alarm.

Firefighters classified the fire as an accident brought on by careless smoking. The damage was estimated at $70,000.
