Downtown Las Vegas fire destroys 5 sheds

A fire that started in a downtown Las Vegas shed Friday night spread to four others, destroying all five, a fire official said.

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue responded to reports of a house fire around 6 p.m. at 2204 Wenger Ave. near South Eastern Avenue and Fremont Street. Upon arrival, crews noticed no houses were on fire but could see flames behind the houses, department spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The houses are very close together and surrounded by wood fencing, and the fire spread to four neighboring sheds, he said.

“The sheds and the fences are completely destroyed.”

Crews were able to surround the fire and prevent it from spreading to the homes. The fire was knocked down in under 20 minutes, Szymanski said.

American Red Cross volunteers are assisting three families affected by the fire by providing comfort and care, according to an American Red Cross of Southern Nevada media release. The Red Cross Disaster Action Team volunteers are meeting with residents and will ensure everyone has a safe place to sleep and has food, clothing, medication and other essentials.

The cause of the fire is under investigation. Damages have not yet been estimated.
