GROUPS THAT OPPOSE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE SPEAK OUT AGAINST VISITING BAND'S AD

Area nonprofit groups that cater to domestic violence victims recently spoke out jointly against an advertisement that critics said promoted violence against women.

Representatives from The Rape Crisis Center and Safe Nest and Clark County Commissioner Mary Beth Scow said their Nov. 2 public statement was in response to a recent Guns N' Roses ad that depicted a sexually assaulted woman. The hard rock band is performing on select dates through November in The Joint Las Vegas at the Hard Rock Hotel, 4455 Paradise Road.

Images depicting violent rape or attack on women can serve as a mechanism to normalize violence against women, said Hannah Brook, executive director of The Rape Crisis Center.

BUFFALO DRIVE TO CLOSE TEMPORARILY BETWEEN RUSSELL ROAD AND PATRICK LANE

Buffalo Drive between Russell Road and Patrick Lane is set to be closed through Dec. 24 due to the construction of an enclosed flood-control channel, according to Clark County.

Traffic is being detoured around the project area, the county said.

The construction, which began Oct. 28, is part of a $6.9 million flood control project that stretches from Sunset Road to Hacienda Avenue.

TAB Contractors Inc. is conducting the project, which is expected to be finished by late summer 2013.
