Dining pick of the week: Du-par’s

PICK OF THE WEEK:

DU-PAR'S

Golden Gate, 1 Fremont St., 366-9378

For pancakes, pies and hamburgers, this family-style diner has become popular among locals and tourists. All hamburgers are made with Harris Ranch chuck beef and served with fries, potato salad, fresh fruit or coleslaw. Other sandwiches include BLT avocado, French dip, turkey club, Monte Cristo and The Californian, a grilled, boneless chicken breast topped with avocado, bacon and Swiss on a toasted baguette. Popular entrees are meat loaf, chicken fried steak, garlic shrimp scampi, beef liver, chicken or steak pot pie, crab cakes and creamed Welsh rarebit prepared with cheddar cheese sauce on a grilled English muffin with bacon and tomato. Featured breakfast items are Du-par's legendary buttermilk pancakes, thick white bread French Toast, omelets with hashed browns and steel-cut oatmeal. If you prefer something sweet with your morning coffee, try the bear claw, Butterhorn or banana nut bread. The true dessert aficionado will find a rotating selection of pies each day, such as chocolate cream, rhubarb, coconut custard, Southern pecan, lemon meringue, cherry, green apple and peach, along with chocolate fudge brownie topped with ice cream, banana split, old-fashioned malt or milkshake and hot fudge sundae. Entrees begin at $11.75 and hamburgers at $9.75. Du-par's is open 24/7.
