Cox Communications plans back-to-school fairs

The eighth annual Cox Back-to-School Fairs, sponsored by Amerigroup Community Care, are planned for Aug. 1 at Downtown Summerlin, 2025 Festival Plaza Drive; Aug. 8 at the Meadows Mall, 4300 Meadows Lane; Aug. 15 at The Boulevard Mall, 3528 S. Maryland Parkway; and Aug. 22 at The Galleria at Sunset, 1300 W. Sunset Road. Fairs are scheduled from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and are open to the public. They are set to feature more than 40 booths from community agencies, nonprofits and businesses.

Attendees can expect to find resources and information geared toward the back-to-school readiness, with scheduled participants set to include several divisions of the Clark County School District with information on food service, bus transportation, zoning and more. Low-cost immunizations will be provided through First Med Health and Wellness Center in partnership with Immunize Nevada.

Benefit to help fund Project 150 Youth Council Scholarship Program

The Project 150 Youth Council plans to honor the memory of Angel and Jackie Velasquez at the second annual Velasquez Memorial Scholarship Fundraiser. Proceeds from the fundraiser events will benefit the youth council's scholarship program, which awards scholarships to local students in the Velasquez Family name.

A balloon release ceremony is planned for 7 p.m. Aug. 1 at Palms Northwest Mortuary & Cemetery, 6701 N. Jones Blvd., in memory of Angel Velasquez, a Project 150 Youth Council member and 2012 Las Vegas High School graduate who was killed by a drunken driver on Aug. 1, 2013; and his sister, Jackie, who was an honor roll student at Valley High School and died Oct. 3, 2014 after a two-month cancer battle.

A benefit car wash is planned from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 2 at Abuela'€™s Tacos, 4225 E. Sahara Ave. The Velasquez Memorial Soccer Tournament & Carnival is planned from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Aug. 16 at Tropical Breeze Park, 1505 E. Tropical Parkway in North Las Vegas. Back-to-school backpacks and suppliesbeing collected through Aug. 7

With a new school year fast approaching, the Clark County Department of Family Services, Foster Connect, Fostering Southern Nevada and Foster Kinship are coming together to ask the community to donate new backpacks, school supplies and school uniforms to children in the care of family services.

The drive runs through Aug. 7. Donations should be brought to Peggy'€™s Attic, 701 N. Pecos Rd., behind the Family Court building, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Call 702-455-5424.

WGU Nevada opens office at the Innevation Center

WGU Nevada, a nonprofit, online, competency-based university aimed at expanding access to higher education for Nevadans, has opened office headquarters at the Innevation Center, 6795 S. Edmond St.

WGU Nevada offers more than 50 accredited bachelor’€™s or master'€™s degrees in fields critical to building Nevada’€™s economy: business, K-12 teacher education, information technology, and health professions, including nursing.

Aviation Institute of Maintenance to host bottled water drive for Salvation Army

The Aviation Institute of Maintenance plans to host a Beat the Heat student bottled water drive to benefit The Salvation Army through Aug. 14. The drive will collect bottles and cases of water from students with a classroom competition.

The Salvation Army serves about 2,000 bottles of water a day throughout the summer. Its 35 W. Owens Ave. site also serves as one of the community'€™s cooling stations.

Smith's donates school supplies to Teacher EXCHANGE

Smith'€™s Food and Drug recently donated $4,000 worth of school supplies to the Clark County School District'€™s Teacher EXCHANGE and two $500 gift cards to local firefighters after celebrating the remodel of its 65,000-square-foot store at 7130 N. Durango Drive in Centennial Hills. The project is part of Smith'€™s $40.5 million 2015 Southern Nevada investment plan.

Summer book sale for teachers planned at Clark County Library

Teachers can purchase gently used children's books or text books for 25 cents from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 1 at the Clark County Library District Foundation Bookstore at the Clark County Library, 1401 E. Flamingo Road. The books usually sell for 50 cents. Teacher identification cards are required for the discount.

Nevada Connections Academy plans information session in Henderson

Nevada Connections Academy plans to host an information session from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Aug. 20 at the Seven Hills Conference Center, 3215 St. Rose Parkway in Henderson.

The academy is a virtual public school, and the sessions will allow interested families to meet with its certified teachers and parents with children currently enrolled.
