First Friday listings, Nov. 5, 2015

The First Friday arts festival is scheduled from 5 to 11 p.m. Nov. 6 at venues throughout the 18b Las Vegas Arts District in downtown Las Vegas, near the intersection of Charleston Boulevard and Main Street. The new nonprofit organizing the event is stepping back while officials organize and re-evaluate what can be realistically achieved at the events. The result is a scaled-back festival with some food vendors and art booths, primarily in the parking lot east of Art Square, 1025 S. First St., but with the main focus being the galleries in and around the district.

"The First Friday Art Walk will always be a fixture of our neighborhood because it's completely within our individual control," an 18b Arts District representative said. "First Friday, the 501(c)(3), is not going to pay the costs associated with the major street closures. First Friday Org will do promotion for us, if we provide them with events to promote while there is still time to promote them. As a neighborhood, we are producing individual openings and events. Every First Friday event in the neighborhood is official."

The Guerilla Kages organized by Ruvo Logic will be on hiatus this month. The portable, standing painting surfaces have featured live paintings by established artists and students on the closed-off streets near the corner of Charleston Boulevard and Art Way. Without the street closures, Logic plans to offer "Student Art Bazaar" at Third Street Studios, 1113 S. Third St., in conjunction with Rock'N'Noodles, 1108 S. Third St.

Limited parking is available on nearby streets, and paid parking is available close to the event, but spaces fill up early. Visitors are cautioned to avoid parking in unauthorized areas, such as vacant lots, as they may be subject to towing.

Although the main events are scheduled at the 18b Arts District, the organizers note that First Friday exists all over downtown Las Vegas, and the sense of wonder and creative energy has expanded to the Fremont East area before and after each First Friday event with engaging arts, crafts, bands, and food and drink specials at Fremont East locations at First Friday-Fremont.

Preview Thursday is scheduled from 6 to 9 p.m. Nov. 5 and offers a more low-key event before First Friday booths are set up. The preview presents an opportunity to see many of the galleries and shows before the crowds on Friday.
