Highlighting achievements, Sept. 8, 2016 — PHOTOS

New executive director: Jodi Manzella has been named the new executive director of After-School All-Stars Las Vegas, the organization announced Aug. 11. Manzella was the chief operating officer at Junior Achievement of Southern Nevada for 17 years. After-School All-Stars is a organization that provides underprivileged youths with a chance to take part in free after-school programs of all kinds.

Ship’s anniversary: The USS Nevada celebrated its 30th anniversary Aug. 12 with an event at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor in Washington state. Nevada’s namesake ship became the fourth active Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine, the third from Bangor, to reach the 30-year landmark. USS Nevada was commissioned Aug. 16, 1986.

New board members: Honor Flight Southern Nevada has added two new members, Joe Brown and Tony Bonnici, to its board of directors. The organization flies World War II veterans to Washington, D.C., twice annually to visit memorials in their honor. Brown is an attorney in the Las Vegas Valley, and Bonnici is the general manager of Lotus Broadcasting.

Students honored: Four local high school students received $1,000 scholarships from the Richard Harris Law Firm for winning the seventh annual Students with a Cause competition. Jordan Dailey (Palo Verde High School), Janisse Badere (Chaparral High School) and Samanta Fabela-Andaya and Pablo Cortez (Advanced Technologies Academy) were the winners. The categories for the contest were videos, artwork, short stories and website design.

Honor Rolls:

— Zachary Tamez of Henderson made the dean’s list at Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Ill., for the spring 2016 semester.

— Sean Sullivan of North Las Vegas made the dean’s list at the University of Akron in Akron, Ohio, for the spring 2016 semester.

— Ricky Arellano, Fernando Rocha and Jennifer Smulo, all of Las Vegas, made the dean’s list at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y., for the spring 2016 semester.

— Destiny McCormick of Henderson was named to the president’s list at Genesee Community College for the spring 2016 semester. McCormick was one of 430 students selected from Genesee’s seven locations.

— Ryan Williams of Henderson received faculty honors at Georgia Tech in Atlanta for the spring 2016 semester. Faculty honors go to undergrad students who achieve a 4.0 GPA.

— Morgan Hill of Las Vegas, a graduate of Faith Lutheran High School, made the dean’s list for the 2016 spring semester at Rhodes College in Memphis, Tenn.

— Madison Wedderspoon of Henderson, and Brandon Johnson and Cameron Rosser, both of Las Vegas, earned honor roll distinctions for the spring 2016 semester at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan.

— Jordyn Derflinger of Henderson made the dean’s list for the spring 2016 semester at the University of Minneosta-Crookston in Crookston, Minn.

— John T. Flint of North Las Vegas made the dean’s list for the spring 2016 semester at Saint Michael’s College in Colchester, Vermont.
