READER EXPRESSES CONSTERNATION AT LACK OF CROSSWALK CONTROL

Once again, I must complain about drivers not letting pedestrians cross the street. They cut us off and and blare their horns when we’re in the right of way in the crosswalks. I was told by a friend that on Dec. 22, another young person was hit and killed while in the crosswalk at Morris Street and Tropicana Avenue. I viewed the intersection. Half of the crosswalks are not even painted, and drivers do not stop. He and I have both contacted 911 and 311 and told them of this situation, and we both were told to contact traffic. They don’t do anything, either.

I would like to know why is it that the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department will not pull anyone over for committing this traffic violation and why not post anyone at that intersection?

I am reaching out to the media and other sources in hope it would make LVMPD take heed to what is happening in our crosswalks. Officers have no problem citing individuals for jaywalking, but when it comes to individuals cutting us off in the intersections, they don’t seem to care.

While working in Green Valley for the past two years, my friend finally asked a Henderson Police officer, “Are drivers not supposed to wait until the crosswalk is clear before turning?” He was told, “Yes, but they dont,” and that was the end of the conversation.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. May you and yours be safe this holiday season, especially in the crosswalks.
