West African artist’s works travel to Las Vegas

The West African country of Cameroon is a bit closer to North Las Vegas thanks to artist Angu Walters. The 30-year-old painter is a splash of color in a din of poverty and political unrest, said Chuck Cavanaugh, the Southwest resident who helped put Walters’ name on the lips of Las Vegas artists.

Artists honored at Celebrating Life!

The winners of the 12th annual Celebrating Life! juried fine art competition were announced in a May 25 ceremony at the Charleston Heights Arts Center, 800 S. Brush St.

Yarnstormers set to decorate Paradise-area bridge

Yarn creations adorn nearly every corner of the West Flamingo Senior Center, 6255 W. Flamingo Road. The railing at the front entrance is covered in yarn. The bulletin board is framed in yarn. The handles on the backs of the chairs are wrapped in yarn.

Mariachi students keep music alive in Smith Center performance

Clark County School District mariachi students performed with the school district’s ballet folklórico program and a 90-piece student symphony orchestra at the Smith Center for the Performing Arts after a workshop and rehearsal with professional ensemble Mariachi Cobre from Disney World.

Things to do in Paradise/Downtown May 8-14

Literary Las Vegas: Dennis Goode

Las Vegas novelist, poet and short story author Dennis Goode grew up in New York City, the setting for his novel “Time Squares.” The book follows the adventures of two young boys curious about the lives and stories of the neighbors stacked in apartments around them, “intrigued by the fact that people lived on top and below one another, and that they could be seen at once in a single swooping glance.”
