Pools ready for residents to dip their toes into summer season

Though the valley’s newest water parks’ openings may be delayed, the county and city pools are set to go for the season.

“It’s possible we’ll lose some numbers to Wet ‘n’ Wild but probably not,” said Clark County aquatics program supervisor Sharon Cornell. “We’re so affordable. You can’t beat $2 a day for a kid.”

Cornell said that last summer, Clark County pools boasted more than 125,000 open swim visits, and more than 32,000 classes and lessons were taught last year.

“We jumped up about 20,000 open swim visits last year,” Cornell said. “I think that was due to the opening of the Hollywood Aquatics Center.”

The valley has six county-operated water parks, two public pools and two seniors’ pools.

The water parks are set to open special hours for open swim from noon to 6 p.m. May 25, 26 and 27 and June 1 and 2.

On June 3, they are to settle into regular summer hours for open swim from noon to 4 p.m. during the week and noon to 6 p.m. on weekends.

The city of Las Vegas plans to open its pools for special days from 2 to 6 p.m. May 25 and June 1 and then full time for the summer beginning June 8.

The city operates six pools, but Garside Pool, 300 S. Torrey Pines Drive, will be closed this summer as it undergoes major renovations.

“The pool is 40 years old,” said Margaret Kurtz, a public information officer for the city of Las Vegas. “The renovations are going to take a year. We share that pool with Garside Junior High School, and we can’t begin work until the school year is over.”

The city of North Las Vegas is set to go for the summer starting June 14, and its pools are to be open 1 to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Henderson’s pools are set to be open for early summer swimming from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. May 26 and 27 and June 1 and 2.

Starting June 7, all 10 of the city’s pools will be open from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. seven days a week.

Open swim hours are open to anyone willing to pay admission. Henderson residency is not required.

At 8 a.m. June 18, the Hollywood Aquatics Center, 1550 S. Hollywood Blvd., and Desert Breeze Aquatic Facility, 8275 Spring Mountain Road, are set to participate in an attempt to break the record for the world’s largest swim lesson.

The record was set last year and verified by Guinness World Records when 24,800 children and adults representing 16 countries on five continents participated in a swim class at the same time.

“This is our first year participating,” Cornell said. “It will be a 30-minute lesson, and we’re all really excited about it.”

While it’s the first year for the county, the city of Henderson will be participating in the record-breaking attempt for the third year.

“We had a great time doing it last year,” said Julie Telios with Henderson Parks and Recreation. “You’ve got to see it.”

The city of Las Vegas hopes to participate in next year’s attempt.
