Driver of vehicle that fatally struck pedestrian identified

Police are investigating a crash that killed a 65-year-old Las Vegas man while he tried to cross the street outside of a crosswalk.

The crash happened about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday on Las Vegas Boulevard North near Walnut Road when an SUV hit the pedestrian as he attempted to cross the boulevard from the median to the north side, Las Vegas police said. The victim was transported to University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

The driver of the 2005 Chevrolet Tahoe who hit the man has been identified as 21-year-old Mauro Lucero-Ruiz. The Clark County coroner's office has not yet identified the victim.

The crash marks the 66th traffic-related fatality in Las Vegas police's jurisdiction this year.
