DUI checkpoint set up tonight in central Las Vegas

THE ASSOCIATED PRESS

Las Vegas police are setting up a DUI checkpoint in central Las Vegas as part of ramped-up enforcement leading up to the Labor Day party weekend.

The station will be set up from 7 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Sunday near Paradise and Tropicana and extra officers will be patrolling the surrounding area.

Officials say the location has been very successful in the past for catching drunken drivers.

Funding for the checkpoint and extra officers throughout southern Nevada comes from the Nevada Office of Traffic Safety.

Authorities say the event symbolizes the commitment of Nevada law enforcement agencies to reduce the number of DUI collisions and traffic fatalities.

Officers from the Nevada Highway Patrol, North Las Vegas Police Department, Henderson Police Department, and Lincoln County Sheriff's Office will be participating.
