Free food market planned in Vegas

Lutheran Social Services of Nevada will hold a free, open-air food market for low-income families and seniors Thursday.

The organization is giving the needy the chance to shop for fresh produce and baked goods, free of charge, at Lutheran Social Services of Nevada’s Open Air Market from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.

The event, in the parking lot at 73 Spectrum Blvd., is prepared to serve more than 24,000 meals. About 250 households will receive up to 80 pounds of food, creating approximately 96 meals per household, the organization said.

Lutheran Social Services hosts the food banks four times per year, and the organization distributes about 20,000 meals per month at its food pantry, which has a supermarket feel.

The pantry is open on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Seniors may access the pantry once per month, and non-seniors once every other month.
