Girl, 6, killed in southwest valley accident

A 6-year-old girl was killed Tuesday in the southwest valley after she apparently tried to enter a moving vehicle without the driver’s knowledge, Las Vegas police said.

The girl was dragged 40 feet before the driver became aware of what was happening, police said..

The accident happened at 3:05 p.m. on Torino Avenue, near Durango Drive and Blue Diamond Road, and involved a 2006 Dodge Magnum.

According to the preliminary investigation, the girl opened the door and tried to get into the car as it was pulling away.

She was rushed to University Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead. Her name was not released.

The driver was identified as Michael Gant, 52, of Las Vegas.

The death was the 35th traffic-related fatality so far this year within the jurisdiction of the Metropolitan Police Department.
