Henderson recycles holiday trees

Henderson officials are encouraging residents to recycle their Christmas trees from Dec. 26 through Jan. 16.

Residents can drop off their live trees during regular park hours at seven Henderson locations:

—Anthem Hills Park, 2256 N. Reunion Drive.

—Acacia Park, 50 Casa del Fuego St.

—Pecos Legacy Park, 150 Pecos Road.

—Mission Hills Park, 551 E. Mission Drive.

—Morrell Park, 500 Harris St.

—Whitney Ranch Recreation Center, 1575 Galleria Drive.

—Arroyo Grande Sports Complex, 298 Arroyo Grande Blvd.

All non-organic material, such as lights and ornaments, should be removed from the trees. These items cannot be recycled and could damage chipping equipment. Flocked and artificial trees also cannot be recycled.

The Henderson Parks and Recreation Department will chip the trees into mulch. The mulch will be used in parks and landscaping around Henderson municipal buildings.

Mulch also will be made available to residents for free from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 4 at Pecos Legacy Park and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Jan. 11 at Acacia Demonstration Gardens. Participants should bring their own shovel and container.

The number of trees recycled by the Henderson community has more than doubled in the five years the city has offered the program, from 1,734 trees in 2008 to 3,751 trees in 2012.
