House fire in western valley sends two to hospital

A grandmother was hospitalized in critical condition for severe smoke inhalation after a house caught fire near Jones and Charleston boulevards Saturday afternoon.

Her teenage grandson was also transported to University Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

Las Vegas fire crews arrived at the two-story residence in the 5000 block of Cory Place to find the older woman exiting the home. Soot was visible around her mouth and nose, making it difficult for her to breathe after she inhaled superheated air, fire officials said. The teen was found in a bedroom when firefighters searched the home. The two were the only people in the home at the time of the fire, but six family members were displaced.

The blaze was confined to an enclosed patio room near the back of the house, fire officials said. Only contents burned, creating a thick, extremely hot, black smoke in the room. Damages were estimated at $3,000, according to the Las Vegas Fire Department.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, although it does not appear to have been intentional, officials said.
