Las Vegas man killed in three-car collision

A three-car collision at Fort Apache and Red Hill roads Monday afternoon left one person dead, Las Vegas police said.

Police said the collision occurred shortly before 2 p.m. at the intersection south of Charleston Boulevard.

A 2013 Ford Mustang driven by Brooke Jones, 18, of Las Vegas, was traveling south in the center travel lane of Fort Apache, approaching a green light at Red Hills.

A 1979 Volkswagen Beetle convertible, driven by a 78-year-old Las Vegas man whose name has not yet been released, turned left at a permissive green light into the path of the Mustang.

When the cars struck, the driver of the Volkswagen was ejected from the car. He died at the scene.

Jones had two male passengers, ages 17 and 18. The three teens suffered minor injuries, according to police.

A third car also was hit after the initial collision between the Mustang and Volkswagen. An investigation into the crash is ongoing.

This is the 69th traffic-related fatality in the Metropolitan Police Department's jurisdiction this year.
