Las Vegas observes 9/11

Las Vegas residents are invited to join various organizations on Thursday to remember the lives lost on Sept. 11, 2001.

Las Vegas police and the Las Vegas Fire Department invite the public to join them in honoring those who died in the terrorist attacks on the United States 13 years ago.

Metro’s memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. in Police Memorial Park, 3250 Metro Academy Way. This is a free event.

Undersheriff Jim Dixon will present the keynote address. Clark County Commissioner Larry Brown and Las Vegas Fire Chief William McDonald also will speak.

The Las Vegas Fire Department is holding additional memorials for the public.

From 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., residents can pay their respects at any Las Vegas fire station. All fire departments will be participating in the “tolling of the bells,” a longtime practice firefighters use to pay tribute to firefighters killed in the line of duty.

A special ceremony will be held at Fire Station Five, 1020 Hinson Street, at 7 a.m. A special U.S. flag that once flew over the World Trade Center will be hoisted to half-staff and a piece of steel from the site will be displayed, spokesman Tim Szymanksi said.

The annual Las Vegas Firefighters 9/11 Tribute and March put on by Downtown3rd will take place at 7 p.m in downtown Las Vegas. The march will begin at 7:30 p.m. on Stewart Avenue. About 300 firefighters, police officers, military personnel and community leaders are set to take part.
