Las Vegas police arrest man in June shooting death
An arrest has been made in connection with a shooting in June near Sahara Avenue and Mojave Road that killed one, according to Las Vegas police.
Kareem David Wilkes, 34, was booked on multiple charges including murder with a deadly weapon, attempted murder, burglary with a firearm and possession of a gun by a prohibited person.
Police responded to a shooting in the 2600 block of Heritage Court on June 20 just after 11 a.m. Multiple people had been shot, including Michael McCarthy, 54, who died.
The arrest report shows that Wilkes had a “criminal relationship” with one of the residents, James Heckman, who also goes by “Peace.” Witness Brandon Jones told police he was staying at the home for a few days. He said Wilkes, who also goes by “Money,” called the house the day before asking Jones to look around the house for a wallet. Jones looked around but could not find the wallet.
Wilkes and two other men came to the house the next day, police said. They broke a window before entering the home.
McCarthy met Wilkes at the door and talked with him in another room. Jones overheard Wilkes say, “I want my money back.” McCarthy replied, “I bet you do,” according to police. Wilkes asked about other items until he shot at McCarthy, police said.
Wilkes shot two other women multiple times before leaving the home, police said.
Police records show that Wilkes has a criminal drug record.
