Lockdown at Las Vegas Library lifted after man leaves roof

Updated September 1, 2017 - 6:43 pm

The Las Vegas Library was on lockdown for more than two hours Friday while police worked to get a man safely off the roof.

Officers responded about 10:45 a.m. to the library at 833 Las Vegas Blvd. North. Arriving Metropolitan Police Department units found the man pacing on the roof, department spokesman Aden OcampoGomez said.

“We don’t know why he’s up there or how he got up there,” OcampoGomez said during the incident. “He’s telling officers he can’t get down.”

Just after 1:05 p.m., the man agreed to climb down a ladder on the side of the library. It’s unclear why he was on the roof, but as of Friday afternoon, police said the man was not facing any charges.

No one was allowed to enter the building during the incident, and the police response prompted a road closure in the southbound lanes of Las Vegas Boulevard North.

“Our officers were out in the heat a long time to ensure safety for the individual and citizens at the library,” OcampoGomez said. “They’re sweaty, so if you run into a stinky officer, you know why.”
