Man arrested after police standoff, road closures in southwest valley

A police standoff in the southwest valley caused road closures and home evacuations late Saturday morning.

Las Vegas police set up a perimeter about 11:45 a.m. around Red Rock Ridge Avenue, near Buffalo Drive and Starr Avenue.

Nearly two dozen police vehicles and a helicopter surveyed the Mountain’s Edge neighborhood, and officers were telling neighbors to stay in their houses.

Metro supervisor Lt. Michael Wallace said police were responding to a domestic violence call about 10 a.m.

A man threatened a woman with while she was trying to move out, Wallace said.

Police got to work to contain the incident, and, when they confirmed the man had a weapon, the SWAT team was called for. Police negotiated a standdown with the man fairly quickly, however, and the situation was resolved before the SWAT team arrived, Wallace said.

The man, about 30 years old, surrendered and was arrested just after 12:30 p.m. Wallace said he will face felony charges, such as assault with a deadly weapon.
