Man arrested in connection with Payless Shoe Source robbery

A man police believe robbed an east valley shoe store at gunpoint Thursday morning is in custody.

The Payless Shoe Source at 581 N. Eastern Ave., near the intersection at Bonanza Road, was robbed at 10:14 a.m., police said. The man then fled through the parking lot and was last seen walking north on Bonanza toward Eastern, Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said.

No one was hurt, Meltzer said, but witnesses told police the man fired a shot inside the store before he left.

Callers in the area reported seeing an armed man in the area, police said.

Officers set up a perimeter and were patrolling the immediate area near the store Thursday morning, Meltzer said, but no roads were closed.

Police received reports about 12:45 p.m. that the man sought in the robbery might be in an apartment in the 800 block of North Eastern, Meltzer said. Initially, he wouldn’t come out of the apartment, Meltzer said, but police took him into custody without incident at 3:11 p.m.

As of Thursday afternoon, he had not been arrested because detectives were working to connect him to the Payless robbery, but they believe he is the robber, Meltzer said.

It was unclear if the man was armed when he was in the apartment, Meltzer said.

Northbound Eastern was closed between Washington Avenue and Bonanza while detectives investigate.
