Man arrested in fatal southwest valley stabbing
The man accused of attacking and killing a woman with a butcher knife this month has a history of mental illness and being “unpredictable and violent,” according to a Metro arrest report.
Julio Cesar Angulo, a 24-year-old from Inglewood, Calif., was arrested Sunday and faces a murder charge for the May 2 death of his uncle’s wife, Norma Chavez, 47, of Las Vegas, police said.
Detectives identified Angulo as a suspect soon after the homicide, but did not release details of his arrest.
Las Vegas police were called to the 3900 block of Calle Del Sol, near Flamingo Road and Decatur Boulevard, about 1 p.m. on May 2 and found Chavez’s body outside. She had been stabbed in the neck.
Jesus Chavez, Norma Chavez’s nephew, told police that the family had received an unexpected visit from Angulo hours before the slaying. Angulo told Jesus Chavez that he was in town for the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao fight that night.
The trio sat out on the patio, Jesus Chavez told police. He then remembers his aunt calling his name before Angulo punched and kicked him unconscious. Jesus Chavez told police he woke to find his aunt’s body and Angulo gone.
Video from a nearby convenience store and a cashier’s testimony showed that Angulo had walked into the store after the time of the slaying and that he was “disheveled” with possible injuries to his face.
Angulo has a history of schizophrenia and had threatened his mother’s life in California, family told Metro. Police in California were called several times to incidents involving Angulo and he was often hospitalized. His mother obtained a restraining order against him.
