Man dead after officer-involved shooting in central Las Vegas

Las Vegas police said a man died after three officers shot at him early Tuesday morning in the central valley.

The confrontation occurred about 2 a.m. at an apartment complex near Maryland Parkway and Twain Avenue.

Earlier in the morning, an officer spotted a white Mitsubishi with plates for a different vehicle and tried to pull it over. The driver refused to stop, and officers did not pursue it, according to Metro Capt. Matt McCarthy. The same vehicle was located around Maryland and Twain a short time later.

The man ditched the car and ran into the French Oaks condominium complex, near Katie Avenue and Maryland. As officers arrived a security guard was escorting the man out of the complex. The man initially ran off when officers tried to talk to him, McCarthy said.

Throughout the encounter, the man refused to show police his hands. An officer used a Taser, but it didn't work, McCarthy said.

Three officers shot at him when he was seen reaching for a firearm, according to police. A gun was found at the scene.

The man died at Sunrise Hospital Medical Center. The Clark County coroner's office will identify him after his family has been notified.

No officers were injured.

Additional details about the man, the officers or the shooting were not immediately available. Metro's policy is to identify the involved officers, who will be placed on paid administrative leave, after two days. Metro will disclose additional details about the encounter in the coming days, per its policies.
