Man killed, 2 officers shot in North Las Vegas neighborhood

Two North Las Vegas SWAT officers were wounded and a man was fatally shot during a police standoff Tuesday night.

Department spokesman Aaron Patty said the incident began just after 5 p.m. as a domestic disturbance in the 100 block of Spur Ranch Avenue, near the intersection of Alexander Road and Commerce Street.

The officers were treated for minor gunshot wounds and released from the hospital Tuesday night, Patty said.

A man within the home was threatening others inside with a shotgun. The situation escalated after police arrived and the man barricaded himself in the home in a "hostage situation," Patty said.

After the SWAT team arrived, the man came out of his home, "presented" the shotgun to police and "there was an exchange of gunfire," Patty said.

Multiple officers fired at the man, killing him.

Neighbors said the man who was killed lived in the home with his girlfriend, multiple children and her father.

Ian, who declined to give a last name, told reporters that the man who was killed lived next door to him.

"He was in the house with a shotgun," he told reporters from behind yellow crime scene tape. "He was obviously on drugs."

Patty said he could not corroborate neighbors' versions of events and could not answer questions about the timeline of events until the investigation was completed.

Several neighbors were corralled into the parking lot of Canyon Springs High School, where they were told about 7:30 p.m. that they would have to wait several hours before they could get to their homes.

Neighbor Jonathan Baker, 30, said he often waved at the man involved as he drove down the street.

"I've only met him once," Baker said, adding the man was about his age and seemed pretty normal.

Every afternoon the man would clean and work on his car in the street, he said.

"He was kind of a staple," Baker said.

Patty said additional details would be released late Tuesday night.

This was the second officer-involved shooting for North Las Vegas police this year. A traffic stop at a Circle K convenience store at Eastern and Searles avenues, near Owens street, turned deadly on Jan. 11. Salvador Figueroa, 29, was shot and killed after a foot chase.

The man killed Tuesday will be officially identified by the Clark County coroner's office.
