Man killed, others hurt in officer-involved shooting

Las Vegas police shot and killed a man and wounded another man and a woman near Clark High School around 3:30 p.m. Friday, according to a department spokesman.

Police said they were searching for a man wanted for the attempted murder of his girlfriend, who was shot in the face with a handgun at close range. Capt. Chris Jones, of the robbery homicide division, said the attempted murder occurred earlier this week.

On Friday, officers saw the suspect leave an apartment in the 4000 block of Pennwood Avenue and walk to a vehicle parked on the street where he joined a man and woman. When the officers confronted the three, the suspect pulled a handgun and fired at the officers.

Two officers returned fire, killing the suspect and wounding the other man, who was in critical condition Friday night. It’s unclear whether he was armed. Police said he did not shoot at the officers.

The woman was “superficially” wounded in a lower extremity, Jones said. She was being questioned by police Friday, but neither she nor the wounded man has been charged with a crime.

No officers were injured in the incident.

The identity of the dead man will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office.

The names of the officers involved will be released 48 hours after the incident, according to department policy. It was the third officer-involved shooting of 2013.
