Man on oxygen dies after apparent ‘careless smoking’

A man who relied on an oxygen tank to help him breathe died Tuesday from apparent “careless smoking,” the Las Vegas Fire Department said.

The identity of the man was not released.

Fire Department spokesman Tim Szymanski said firefighters learned of the death about 5:30 p.m. at a home on the 6100 block of Daisy Petal Street, near U.S. Highway 95 and Azure Drive.

Szymanski said a woman found the man dead in the kitchen. Oxygen tubes had been burned, but Szymanski was unsure of the cause of the man’s death. The Clark County coroner’s office will make that determination.

The man appeared to be in his 60s, Szymanski said.

Szymanski said the woman last saw the man alive around noon.

There have been three fatal fires under the jurisdiction of the Las Vegas Fire Department this year. All of the fatalities involved people in their 60s who died from careless smoking, Szymanski said.
