Man shot, killed by police after raising gun toward officer
A man was shot and killed by Las Vegas police after he pointed a handgun at an officer in the east valley Monday night, officials said.
The investigation of an armed robbery that happened at 8:20 p.m. at Chuck-E-Cheese's, 350 N. Nellis Blvd., led officers to a home at 3869 King Palm Ave. about 8:35 p.m., Metro wrote in a release Tuesday morning.
The vehicle police said belonged to the robber was parked in the driveway of the residence, near the intersection of Walnut and Alexander roads, with three people standing around it.
Officers were in the process of taking the three individuals into custody when a man armed with a handgun came out through the front door, the release said.
After the man failed to comply to verbal commands to drop his weapon, police said he pointed the gun at one of the officers who subsequently fired the fatal shot.
"One officer did fire at the subject several times, striking him, and then the suspect ran back into the house," Metro Sgt. Jeff Clark told reporters.
Additional officers arrived and rendered aid to the man, who was taken to University Medical Center, where he died. He will be identified by the Clark County coroner's office.
Officer Larry Hadfield said Monday night that no officers were injured.
This was the second officer-involved shooting of that day and the 14th this year, Metro said. Last year there were 16.
Hadfield could not confirm whether the three people who were arrested are still in custody. He said more information will be available at a protocol media briefing that will be held within 72 hours after the shooting.
The identity of the officers involved will be released within 48 hours after the shooting.
