NLV council names street stretch after former Rep. Berkley

A stretch of street in North Las Vegas will be named in honor of former Rep. Shelley Berkley, who served seven terms in Congress.

“Shelley Berkley Way” will run along the road leading to the VA Medical Center, the City Council announced Wednesday. A street sign is expected to be installed by fall.

The council presented a blue street sign and an honorary key to Berkley, the second woman from Nevada elected to Congress. From 1999 to 2013, she represented a district that encompassed North Las Vegas, part of Las Vegas and the Strip.

Councilwoman Anita Wood credited Berkley with several accomplishments, including efforts to get the VA facility built.

“Probably the best thing I did, and most lasting things I did as congresswoman was to make sure that VA Hospital got built,” said Berkley, now Touro University CEO and senior provost. “We had well over 200,000 veterans in the Las Vegas Valley when I first started … and they had no place to go,” she said. “I made a promise to myself and my veterans that I would not rest until we had a VA Hospital of our own.”
