NLV worker found dead in tanker car

A North Las Vegas worker died in a railcar tanker late overnight.

Emergency crews responded to an industrial railroad area at 5095 EL Campo Grande Avenue for a person who was reported down in a railcar tanker about 1 a.m. on Saturday, according to the North Las Vegas Fire Department.

Witnesses told first-responders that their co-worker lost consciousness inside the tanker and was not able to climb out.

Firefighters found a tanker car on a railroad track with the top hatch of the vehicle open. They determined the atmosphere inside the empty tanker had highly volatile ethanol vapors and was unsafe.

Because of the extent of work needed to clear the tanker of the hazardous vapors, firefighters remained on the scene with first-responders from multiple agencies until 11 a.m.

Officials said Nevada’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration assumed the investigation.

The worker’s identity will be released by the Clark County coroner’s office once family has been notified.
