North Las Vegas police ID officer in Sunday’s OIS
North Las Vegas police have released the name of the officer involved in Sunday night’s deadly shooting.
Officer Loren Cooley shot Salvador Figueroa, 29, after Figueroa ran from police at a Circle K parking lot at the intersection of Eastern and Searles avenues, near Owens Street. Figueroa pulled a handgun after the officer used a Taser on him. Cooley shot at Figueroa multiple times, police said.
Police were initially called about 8:25 p.m. to investigate a situation between Figueroa and a woman and their two vehicles. Figueroa ran from the scene and Cooley chased him on a brief pursuit before he shot him.
North Las Vegas police have not explained why they started investigating Figueroa.
Cooley, 41, has been with the department for seven years, according to a police news release. He has been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the investigation continues.
This was North Las Vegas’ first officer-involved shooting of the year.
