‘O’ performer injured during performance

A Cirque du Soleil acrobat was injured during a performance of “O” on Wednesday, but released from a hospital Thursday.

The acrobat, whose name has not been released, was performing in the Russian Swing section of the aquatic spectacle at the Bellagio. In the act, the performers swing back and forth like pendulums on mounted boards until they gain enough momentum to vault into the air and land in the water.

“Immediate emergency response was applied. This morning, the artist has been released from the hospital and is doing well. As with any incident, Cirque du Soleil will investigate the cause related to it,” Cirque said in a statement Thursday.

Employers aren’t required to report workplace injuries unless they involve three or more employees or death, said Teri Williams, a spokeswoman for Nevada OSHA.

In November, a performer was more seriously injured performing on a “Wheel of Death” in Cirque’s Aria show, “Zarkana.” And in July 2013, the death of “Ka” aerialist Sarah Guyard-Guillot became the company’s first performing fatality.
