Passenger in New Year’s Day accident dies

A 16-year-old female passenger involved in a car accident during the early morning of New Year's Day has died, Las Vegas police said Tuesday.

Her identity was not released.

Police said occupants of the vehicle that rear-ended the car the girl was traveling in fled on foot after the crash and were outstanding Tuesday night. The crash occurred at Eastern Avenue and Canosa Avenue, near St. Louis Avenue.

Police said that at 2:15 a.m. 48-year-old Lorena Verduzco was driving a 2000 Volkswagen Passat with three other passengers who were all minors including a 2-month-old baby girl.

Police said the Passat was traveling south on Eastern when a 2004 Cadillac Deville struck it from behind, sending it off the road. The Cadillac then went up onto the raised median before rolling over onto its roof. All of its occupants fled.

All the passengers in the Passat except for the teenage girl sustained minor injuries.

Anyone with information on the suspects who fled is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 385-5555 or Detective Sean Lethbridge at 828-3786.
