Pedestrian dies after being hit by off-duty Henderson officer

A 58-year-old Henderson man died Saturday, a day after he was crossing the street in a crosswalk and was struck by a pickup driven by an off-duty Henderson police officer.

The officer, 10-year veteran Wavie Reed, has not been charged, but an investigation into the crash is ongoing.

The victim, who was not identified, was crossing Mountain Vista Street at Ramrod Avenue in a marked crosswalk when he was struck about 3:40 p.m. Friday, according to a Henderson police spokesman.

Reed, 39, had a green light when he was turning left from Ramrod onto Mountain Vista, the spokesman said, when he struck the pedestrian in a marked crosswalk. Nevada law states drivers turning left at an intersection must yield to pedestrians.

The pedestrian was rushed to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center, where he died early Saturday.

Police said investigators did not believe alcohol or speed were factors in the crash, but a blood sample was taken from Reed. Results from the blood test were not immediately known.

It was unclear Saturday whether Reed would remain on active duty. Once the investigation is complete the case will be forwarded to prosecutors for review.

The Clark County Coroner's Office will release the victim's name at a later date.

This was the sixth vehicle fatality in Henderson this year.
