MAYOR'S CUP soccer SHOWCASE
PLANNED IN FEBRUARY

The Las Vegas Mayor's Cup International Showcase soccer tournament is planned Feb. 16-18, with team check-ins Feb. 15.

Admission is free for spectators. Team registration has closed.

The largest international youth soccer tournament in the country is set to be played at the Bettye Wilson Soccer Complex, 7353 Eugene Ave., with other Las Vegas fields to be announced.

More than 6,000 soccer players ages 14 to 19 from at least 11 foreign countries and 28 U.S. states are set to square off in soccer fields around the valley. The event will be co-hosted by the city of Las Vegas and the Downtown Las Vegas Soccer Club and is expected to attract college soccer coaches and recruiters from across the country to scout for both male and female athletes. Spectator admission and parking are free at all games.

Matches are to be played from 8:45 a.m. to 10 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17. Medals and trophies are to be presented to winning teams following each championship game. For more information, including schedules and matches, visit lvmayorscup.com.

YMCA of southern nevada OFFERING DISCOUNT ON NEW MEMBERSHIPS

The YMCA of Southern Nevada encourages people of all ages to "live better, do it together" in 2013 with a savings initiative. Individuals or families can save up to $75 on a new membership when they join by Thursday. No coupon is required for the offer, which is good at all YMCA of Southern Nevada locations: the Bill & Lillie Heinrich YMCA, 4141 Meadows Lane; the Durango Hills Community Center YMCA, 3521 N. Durango Drive; the Centennial Hills Community Center YMCA, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive; and the SkyView YMCA, 3050 E. Centennial Parkway in North Las Vegas.

Membership includes support from trained wellness coaches, free child care while parents use the facility, all-age classes, guest passes and use of participating Ys across the country. Amenities include cardio and strength equipment, pools with lap lanes and lesson areas, gyms, child care rooms and a rock wall. Locker rooms, vending areas and free Wi-Fi are available.

COED FLAG FOOTBALL REGISTRATION OPEN

Coed fall flag football registration for players ages 6 to 14 is open through March 1. League play is set for March 16 to May 11.

Registration is available at the Cimarron Rose Community Center, 5591 N. Cimarron Road, 702-229-1607, and the Veterans Memorial Leisure Services Center, 101 N. Pavilion Center Drive, 702-229-1100.

The cost is $75 per person and includes an NFL team jersey and shorts. A birth certificate is required to register. Volunteer coaches are needed. Cost includes a postseason tournament. No games will be scheduled for March 30.

LEARN HOW TO GROW TOMATOES
AT GARDENING CLASS

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension Master Gardener Helen Brown is scheduled to present All About Tomatoes, a gardening class, at 10 a.m. Feb. 5 at The Family Resource Center at UMC, 1120 Shadow Lane.

Selecting tomato varieties adapted to Southern Nevada determines both the quality and quantity of tomatoes grown in the yard. Some varieties have the ability to set fruit early in the season before hot weather arrives. Some varieties are less prone to sun burning, cat facing and other problems. This is important to the tomato grower. Learn which varieties grow well in this area.

The class is free and open to the public, but preregistration is required.

RED ROCK COUNTRY CLUB
TO HOST TENNIS TOURNAMENT

The second annual Davis Kup of Las Vegas tennis tournament is set to take place Feb. 8-10 at Red Rock Country Club, 2205 Red Springs Drive. The tournament is a three-day event for teaching professionals, with proceeds benefiting the G Alex Foundation, which works to enrich lives through tennis and wellness programs.

Tickets are $25 per person and include the players' party and admission to all matches. MS RELAY SEEKS RUNNING PARTNERS

The MS Run the US 2013 Relay, which is slated for April 16 through Sept. 17 and is to be divided into 22 segments, is currently seeking 14 running partners to take part in each leg of this coast-to-coast run. Each segment covers approximately 140 miles of running over the course of six days. All proceeds raised will support MS research. The relay is set to begin in Los Angeles in mid-April and wrap up in New York City five months later.

SILVERTON PLANS SUPER BOWL CELEBRATION, VIEWING

AND RECREATION PROGRAMS

The North Las Vegas Recreation Division's Activity Schedule of classes, sports and recreation programs is now available.

Registration can be conducted online at cityofnorthlasvegas.com or in person at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, and the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St. A list of offerings is available on the website.

The city's recreation division offers a variety of affordable activities for adults and children, including personal training at the gym, adult and child dance classes, gymnastics, ceramics and martial arts.

Each of the programs encourages healthy exercise and social activities.

NEW A.G.E. EVENTS FOR THOSE
WITH DISABILITIES PLANNED

New A.G.E. for those 22 or older with developmental disabilities is set from 1:30 to 5:30 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the Centennial Hills Active Adult Center, 6601 N. Buffalo Drive. The program offers a variety of activities and special events that promote individuality, self-esteem and independence. The cost is $21 for one to three days, $28 for four days and $35 for five days each week.

RAPTOR PLAY PARK OPENING PLANNED

The Raptor Play Park grand opening is set from 10 a.m. to noon Feb. 16 at the Thunderbird Family Sports Complex, 6105 N. Durango Drive. The event is for all ages.

This new phase to the park will add landscaping and turf areas, lighted sidewalk extensions, a picnic shade shelter, site furnishings, off-site improvements and a scaled F-22 Raptor Stealth Fighter Jet exhibit. Light refreshments will be offered while supplies last.

NORTH LAS VEGAS RECREATION DIVISION ANNOUNCES HEALTH CAMPAIGN

The North Las Vegas Recreation Division has announced its Get Moving! Get Healthy! campaign, which aims to encourage healthy exercise and social activities through the division's programs and sports.

Each month, the Recreation Division will launch an online video highlighting a recreational, social or sports program offered at the Silver Mesa Recreation Center, 4025 Allen Lane, or the Neighborhood Recreation Center, 1638 N. Bruce St.

Featured first is the Recreation Division's martial arts class offerings. The campaign also will highlight activities from its Social Seniors and after-school programs.

ADAPTIVE RECREATION PROGRAM PLANNED FOR THOSE 7 TO 21

The Lorenzi Adaptive Recreation Program for those ages 7 to 21 with disabilities is set from 1 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays at the East Las Vegas Community/Senior Center, 250 N. Eastern Ave. Participants can enjoy a new recreation experience every week, community outings, sports, games, arts and crafts, swimming and movies. The cost is $27 for one to three days, $36 for four days and $45 for five days, per person.

GIRLS ON THE RUN OF LAS VEGAS
SEEKS TEAM MEMBERS

Girls on the Run of Las Vegas is looking to start a team of girls in third through fifth grade in northwest Las Vegas and Summerlin. The group forwards a youth development program, where girls meet twice a week for discussions regarding empowerment, self-confidence and healthy living. The group incorporates stretching, games and running during that time. At the end of the 12-week program, the entire Las Vegas chapter gets together for a 5K race.
