Reids complete move to Anthem
WASHINGTON — On Harry Reid’s to-do list during the Senate’s summer break: Unpack at his new home in Henderson.
The Nevada Democratic senator and his wife, Landra, have completed the purchase of their new house in the upscale Anthem development. The sale closed in mid-July at a price of $769,000, according to Clark County records.
Reid confirmed earlier this summer that he and his wife were preparing to make an offer on an Anthem home, after selling the property where they had lived for 25 years in his hometown of Searchlight.
While they have moved into a community adjacent to the Anthem Country Club, neither Reid nor his wife are known to play golf. However, the new home has an in-ground heated swimming pool and spa with a rock waterfall and built-in barbecue courtyard, according to Realtor descriptions.
The one-story frame-and-stucco home sits on a third of an acre and is sized at 3,500 square feet. It has three bedrooms, 3½ bathrooms and a three-car garage.
The value of the property fluctuated along with real estate elsewhere in the Las Vegas Valley. Its previous owner bought it for $1.1 million in 2007, shortly before the recession.
The Reids sold their Searchlight property to a gold mining company in June for $1.7 million, including its mineral and water rights. Reid, who is 74, said at the time he and his wife desired to move closer to their children, three of whom live in or near Henderson.
Reid’s neighbors in the desert of Searchlight mostly were jackrabbits and rattlesnakes. In Henderson, the couple live alongside an ophthalmologist, an optometrist, an orthodontist, a surgeon, two Realtors, an attorney, a convenience store owner, a corporate executive and several wealthy retirees.
In the new neighborhood of the U.S. Senate majority leader, Republicans outnumber Democrats 25 to 7, with a single Libertarian and a nonpartisan among them, according to county voter records.
Residents of his new ZIP code have contributed $468,462 to political candidates this cycle, with 62 percent going to Republicans, according to campaignmoney.com.
In 2010, one of Reid’s neighbors up the street gave $750 to his Senate challenger, Sharron Angle, according to the campaign records.
