Reunion catches airman’s family by surprise at 51s game

An emotional moment unfolded as fans watched a boy throw out the first pitch at the Las Vegas 51s game on Thursday night at Cashman Field.

Behind the plate, the ball popped in the catcher’s mitt. A special moment for most boys turned into a wild rush of emotion as the catcher took off his mask and started toward the mound.

It wasn’t a 51s player at all. It was the boy’s father, a Nellis airman, home from Afghanistan.

As the man ran toward his son, the boy and his mother, who stood a few paces behind, froze with their hands over their mouths as they realized what was happening. And when he reached them, the tears flowed.

Air Force officials, citing privacy concerns, did not release the identities of the family members.
