Sister of boy, 8, who shot himself in protective custody

The sister of an 8-year-old boy who police say fatally shot himself Saturday night has been taken into protective custody, according the Clark County Department of Family Services.

Clayton James Singleton and his younger sister were at home Saturday night in the 9100 block of Wine Cellar Avenue, near the intersection of Pebble and Fort Apache roads, when Clayton shot himself, Las Vegas police said.

The girl ran next door to tell a neighbor, who called police just before 5:30 p.m., police said.

Neighbors, who did not want to be identified by the Review-Journal on Saturday night, said the girl screamed about blood as she was rushed from the scene.

"CCDFS has opened an investigation and is working in conjunction with local law enforcement," CPS wrote in a public disclosure form. "A relevant family member has been removed from the home. CCDFS will, as deemed appropriate, provide child welfare services, make referrals for child welfare services, and/or take action concerning the welfare and safety of relevant members of the household."

Family Services and Metro did not disclose the girl's age. Neighbors said the girl is 6 years old.

Police said there was no adult supervision or babysitter at the home at the time of the shooting. The handgun belonged to someone in the household, Metro said.
