Springs Preserve taking used cooking oil and grease

The Springs Preserve is expanding its Christmas tree recycling program to include used cooking oil and grease.

Officials at the facility off U.S. Highway 95 at Valley View Boulevard said cooking oil will be collected through Jan. 15 in a special receptacle in the preserve's south parking lot during regular hours from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

It will be reprocessed into biofuel.

Cut Christmas trees are being collected at the same spot, and at 20 other locations in Las Vegas, North Las Vegas, Henderson and Nellis Air Force Base. They will be mulched for use in landscaping.

The holiday cooking oil recycling program is a part of a Clark County Water Reclamation District effort to keep sewers free of oils and grease.
