Storms finally let rain loose in evening

Hours after thunderstorms and flood advisories were issued for Las Vegas on Sunday, the clouds finally let loose across the valley when the sun went down.

The advisories began early Sunday afternoon, but it remained mostly dry until late evening.

Both Henderson and the east valley were hit by heavy rain and wind around 9 p.m. as systems moved in from the northeast and collided with other systems already in the valley. Henderson forecast sites recorded over a half inch of rain in less than 30 minutes.

A flood advisory was scheduled to be in place for the east valley until 11:30 p.m. and the weather service called for wind gusts up to 50 mph.

Strong thunderstorms were reported south of Red Rock Canyon Conservation Area late Sunday afternoon. Flooding was reported in the northwest valley around Grand Teton Drive, which commonly floods during monsoon season.

The weather service also issued a thunderstorm and localized flooding advisory Sunday afternoon for the Carpenter 1 Fire burn area in the Spring Mountains. Last year, the combination of wildfire debris and thunderstorms caused fire retardant to ooze out of city storm drains.
