Washoe District Judge Robert Perry dies

RENO -- Washoe District Judge Robert Perry, a former prosecutor and private attorney, has died.

Authorities at Washoe District Court say Perry died Tuesday afternoon at a hospital with his family at his side. He was 68 and had been ill.

His death was first reported by KRNV-TV.

Perry was appointed to the bench in 2005 by former Gov. Kenny Guinn.

In 2010, he presided over the trial of James Biela, who was convicted and sentenced to death for the murder of Brianna Denison and the sexual assaults of two other women near the University of Nevada, Reno.

Perry was born Nov. 18, 1943 in Salem, Ore. He attended the U.S. Naval Academy and received his law degree from the University of Kansas.

There was no immediate word on services.
