Winter storm causes power outages in Las Vegas; mountains getting snow
About 1,000 homes lost power Thursday evening as a storm passed through the Las Vegas Valley, coating the surrounding mountains with more than 5 inches of snow.
The power went out between 6 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. in the area of Lindell Road and Sahara Avenue due to moisture, said NV Energy spokesman Mark Severts.
Service was expected to be restored to the homes by later Thursday evening, Severts said.
The snow, which caused a winter storm warning to be issued in Mount Charleston and Red Rock Canyon, is expected to continue into early Friday morning and accumulate up to 8 inches.
The warning from the National Weather Service advises residents and tourists to limit traveling on Routes 156, 157 and 158 for emergency situations only. Individuals should bring flashlights, food and water while traveling.
Wind gusts could range from 10 to 25 mph with temperatures between 21 and 38 degrees in the mountains.
