Elko convention, visitor head calling it quits after 13 years

ELKO — The head of the Elko Convention and Visitors Authority says he’ll retire in late November after nearly 13 years at the northeast Nevada agency.

Authority Executive Director Don Newman told the authority board Tuesday that he’ll help the management transition into early 2019.

The Elko Daily Free Press reports that board members Delmo Andreozzi and David Zornes were appointed to develop plans for Newman’s exit and the recruitment of his replacement.

Newman has overseen the Elko Convention Center and marketing of the Elko area to tourists since January 2006.

The facility hosts the National Cowboy Poetry Festival, Elko Mining Expo and the Festival of Trees.

The authority promotes the California Trail Interpretive Center, Western Folklife Center, Northeastern Nevada Museum and the new Cowboy Arts and Gear Museum and outdoor recreation.
