Inmate serving time for vehicle theft dies in prison hospital

An inmate serving time for possession of a stolen vehicle died Saturday afternoon at the Northern Nevada Corrections Center in Carson City, officials said.

The Carson City coroner's office will release Michael West's cause of death, the Nevada Corrections Department said Monday in a statement. He died at the prison's hospital.

The 42-year-old man was committed to prison from Washoe County on Aug. 6, 2014, and was set to serve 48 to 120 months, the Corrections Department said.

It could take up to three months to determine West's cause of death, and the medical examiner's office was conducting an autopsy, officials said.
