Mesquite City Council picks fellow councilman to fill mayor’s spot

Mesquite, Las Vegas’ neighbor 80 miles to the northeast, has a new mayor.

The City Council picked one of its own, Councilman Allan Litman, to finish the remaining two-and-a-half years of ex-Mayor Mark Wier’s term.

“I am humbled by the trust of my fellow council members to lead Mesquite forward,” Litman said in a prepared statement Monday. “I want to personally thank Mayor Mark Wier for his service.”

Litman took over Tuesday, a day after Wier’s resignation became official. Wier’s leaving wasn’t much of a surprise — he had been living and working in Utah since the beginning of the year.

Litman was first elected as councilman in 2011. He was re-elected in 2013 to serve until November 2018. Litman also represents Mesquite on the Southern Nevada Health District board and the Civilian Military Council at Nellis Air Force Base.

Having a new mayor makes another opening in rural Clark County politics. The Mesquite City Clerk is accepting applications to fill the City Council vacancy. They can be picked up at City Hall, 10 E. Mesquite Blvd., or be filled out online at www.mesquitenv.gov.

Deadline for filing is noon Wednesday.

Mesquite’s next municipal election is in November 2016.
