Nevada inmate death was natural, not homicide, officials say

Foul play has been ruled out as the cause of death for a Nevada inmate, officials said Tuesday.

Inmate Frederick Sigmund died Oct. 18 at the Northern Nevada Correctional Center. At first officials said the death was considered a homicide.

Medicals examiners from the Carson City Sheriff’s Office and the Washoe County Crime Lab responded to the facility and determined through an autopsy that his death was the result of an unspecified medical condition.

Sigmund, 72, was committed from Clark County and was serving a sentence of five years to life, with parole, for sexual assault. Sigmund had been incarcerated since Nov. 6, 1981, the Nevada Department of Corrections said.
