Operations at McCarran returning to normal after flights grounded

Operations at McCarran International Airport are returning to normal after flights were grounded for about an hour and a half Wednesday afternoon following an unspecified computer problem in the Federal Aviation Administration’s air traffic control operation in Southern California.

The FAA ordered a “ground stop” of McCarran departures at 1:50 p.m. A McCarran spokesman said the order was lifted at 3:20 p.m.

The airport’s Twitter feed recommended that passengers contact their airlines about potential flight delays the rest of the day because it would take time for schedules to get back to normal.

Flightstats, a company that monitors flights nationwide, said the departure of three-quarters of McCarran’s afternoon flights were delayed.

One flight that was en route to Las Vegas during the disruption was diverted to Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport.
