Sparks rib contest: 9 pounds in 12 minutes

SPARKS — Joey Chestnut, the world-record holder at Nathan’s Famous Hot Dog Contest in New York, has extended his stranglehold on the eating championship at Nevada’s Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-off as well.

Chestnut claimed his fifth consecutive title in Sparks on Wednesday, downing 9 pounds and 2.7 ounces of ribs in 12 minutes.

The 30-year-old champ from Vallejo, Calif., has won eight of the last nine rib championships. He set the world record last year with 13 pounds, 7.6 ounces.

Matt Stonie of San Jose, Calif., finished second with 8 pounds, 3 ounces.

Chestnut bought 30 pounds of the St. Louis-style ribs earlier this week to practice.

On July 4, he ate 61 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes at Coney Island to claim a record eighth-consecutive title.
