HEAD OF THE CLASS: Harris leads Spring Valley girls to tournament title

The senior had 31 points and 11 rebounds to lift the Cougars to a 73-50 win over Agoura (Calif.) in the championship game of the Kiwanis Invitational in Ventura, Calif. DesJardins was the tournament's Most Valuable Player.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Kayla Harris

Spring Valley

The sophomore guard averaged 19 points, eight rebounds, five assists and five steals to lead the Grizzlies to the championship in the Gator Winter Classic.

WRESTLING

Mervyn Penniston-John

Clark

The senior defeated Shadow Ridge's Tyler Carter 7-2 to win the heavyweight title at the prestigious Las Vegas Holiday Classic. Penniston-John was 5-0 in the tournament.

Jon Ruggeroli

Cimarron-Memorial

The senior pinned Alex Stuart of Curtis (Wash.) to win the 170-pound title at the Las Vegas Holiday Classic. Ruggeroli went 6-0 in the tournament.

HEAD OF THE CLASS

ARBOR VIEW — Girls basketball player Autumn Westmoreland averaged 13 points and six rebounds during the West Coast Festival Tournament in Ontario, Calif. Freshman boys basketball player Favor Chukwukelu averaged 12 points in his first three varsity games and had 16 points in a 63-47 win over Union (Utah).

CIMARRON-MEMORIAL — Boys basketball player Jeremiah Broussard made the all-tournament team at the Las Vegas Prep Championship and had 16 points, four rebounds and two steals in a 45-43 victory over Valley.

CORONADO — Girls basketball player Haley Tyrell averaged 14.1 points, 6.0 rebounds, 2.7 steals and 2.3 assists in seven games over the holiday break.

DESERT OASIS — Boys basketball player Drevin Cannon averaged 15 points to help the Diamondbacks win the Tri-State Holiday Classic and was named to the all-tournament team.

GREEN VALLEY — Girls basketball player Yamilei Rodriguez averaged 12 points and nine rebounds over six games to help the Gators to a runner-up finish in the Gator Winter Classic. She had 19 points and 13 rebounds in a 62-56 loss to Spring Valley in the title game.

MOJAVE — Flag football player Raven Williams rushed for more than 100 yards and a touchdown in a 32-30 loss to Cimarron-Memorial. Boys bowler Joe Price had a 672 series against The Meadows
